Migraine Treatment

In Ayurveda Migraine is described as Ardhavbhedak. This is a Vata-predominant disease. Migraine is a form of headache with pain typically limited to a specific region of the head and accompanied by neurological symptoms. These symptoms may include visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, and hypersensitivity to sound or light. The young generation preferably females aged between 25 to 55 are most commonly affected. Episodes of headache may occur after 10 days /15 days / 1 month or early also. Majorly vata dosh dushti is found by nadi parikshan in migraine patients. Along with vata, kapha, and pitta anubandh also occurs. If the kapha anubandh is there the headache starts in the morning and if the pitta anubandh then the headache starts in the afternoon. Anxiety, stress depression, heavy workload, computer job, IT field workers, irregular diet habits, and congenital are also some reasons for the migraine.

Migraine treatment in Ayurveda is given by balancing tridosha i.e. vata, pitta and kapha helps to cure migraine. In this, Nasya, nadiswed, and anuvasan basti are useful. Nasya plays a very important role. Avapidak nasya and shirovirechan nasya are generally used. Shirodhara with Brahmi tail relieves anxiety and stress. Netratarpan gives good results for computer jobs or IT field workers. Raktmokshan through the jugular vein is done in acute headache. Virechan also plays an important role in detoxifying the body and eliminating the pitta dosh of migraine patients. If kapha dushti is more than pitta dushti then Vaman panchkarma gives good results. Ayurvedic medicines like Shirshuladivajra rasa, Sutshekhar, Godanti vati, Kamdudha, Gandharva haritaki, and castor oil are generally used in migraine patients according to body constitution.
